bedA new bed should be an investment, but it does not always follow that an expensive bed will be the most suitable for you. It is important that you think carefully about what you need from a bed, and what room you have available. Beds should be sturdy enough to last at least ten years, and should be comfortable enough to provide good quality sleep. If you are on a tight budget then think about spending a bit less on the bed frame, but a bit more on the mattress, as this will be providing you with the support and comfort you need.

Size
If you share you bed with your partner, then it is important to buy one big enough for the both of you to move around comfortably whilst you sleep. A standard double bed will probably not be big enough if one or both of you are more than the average build, and in most cases two adults sharing would be much more comfortable in a king-size bed (W150 x L200cm). Measure the space in your bedroom, to see what size bed will fit comfortable in the space provided. Try not to have the bed wedged up tightly against the door, walls or wardrobes, and leave enough space around the foot and sides of the bed so that you can walk easily all around it.

Mattress
Many people mistakenly buy expensive orthopaedic mattresses because they think they are better for you, but in reality unless you have a diagnosed medical problem and have been advised to get an orthopaedic mattress, it more than likely they will be too hard and uncomfortable for you. Try out each mattress before you decide, and take the time to just lay back and relax on it for a few moments. Look for mattresses that support your weight across the whole surface (and don’t sag at the edges or in the middle) and try the ‘hand test’, which means checking the space between the small of your back and the mattress as you are lying down. If you cannot fit you hand into this space then the mattress is likely too soft for you. If your hand just fits in between your back and the mattress, and you can move it with only a little resistance then should be a good option for you. If you share a bed it is very important to take your partner with you to test the mattress, to ensure you are both comfortable before you buy.

Bedsteads
If you are on a tight budget then look for less decorative bedsteads, and choose one of the more basic, cheaper designs. Divans can be a good idea if you have a small room, as they have additional drawer space in the bottoms. Bowed slat (or ’sprung slat’) bedsteads give more ‘cushioned’ support than solid slats, which is a good idea if you are still using an older mattress. Headboards are a good option as they help to define your sleeping area, but if you are buying a divan you will most likely have to buy one separately.

When choosing a new bed you should try and get the most comfortable one you can afford, and remember a bed is an investment, providing you with up to 10 years worth of service, so it is well worth spending a bit more money on to get the right one for your needs.
