At first, I thought, I make a mistake or something wrong with me because I found a green urban environment around me, where a lot of plants welcomed me in their kingdom. Moreover, when a strong wind came and those trees were moved, it had a hunch that those were saluting me. But how could it possible? This place was not same just one year ago when I came here to meet my friend. I asked my friend, William, what happened in one year? William gave me a fruit to apart from a tree and said, “It’s a rooftop garden”, and he got the idea when he visited Europe.

The idea of planting rooftops is not a new concept. It began in Europe many years ago. But nowadays it makes a noise in the world to take challenge of food crisis and protect environment pollution. Recently, some countries of Europe for example Switzerland, a law has been approved that all new buildings have to design to relocate the green space covered by the edifice to their roofs. Moreover, every existing building must fulfill with the new law by greening minimum 20 percent of their rooftops.

William said to me some advantages of, such as:

• It may help to absorb carbon dioxide and  reduce air pollution.
• It will increase oxygen.
• Storm water runoff easily.
• The edifice and adjacent area’s aesthetics will be enhanced.
• Property rate could be increased.
• It will make a good impression.
• Economical because there are no extra land costs.
• Temperatures around the structure can be lowered in the hot summer.
• Insulated from the cold in the winter.
• Keep safe from both rainfall and sun.
• Provides extra food.
• Give shade.
• Create an urban and romantic environment.
• Able to protect various weather conditions.
• Saving your heating and cooling costs.

William also said me day by day the quantity of food produced for each person in the world is now dropping. So we should tackle food problems ourselves. He said to me, “now he gets some necessary food items from his garden, and those are fresh and save his money as well.”

Now I think if all of us take plan to set a garden in our roof then we don’t face food crisis in the changing world, otherwise once upon time you will find out that you have money but there is no food to buy. We should use our roof as a land and make productive.
