Mrs Obama Joins in Cooking Class
Many US citizens got surprised on Sunday when first lady Michelle Obama opened the White House kitchen to six culinary students in order to learn them about preparations for a big official dinner. Mrs Obama was joined by White House chef Cristeta Comerford, executive pastry chef Bill Yosses and social secretary Desiree Rogers. They guided the students through the menu and planning for President Barack Obama’s dinner with the nation’s governors.
They gathered in the main kitchen. The first lady told the students from the L’Academie de Cuisine in nearby Gaithersburg, Maryland, “This is where the magic happens.” She told them about the value she places on fresh and regionally grown food. She added, that is particularly important, when trying to get kids to eat vegetables. She said “That’s one of the things that we’re talking a lot about that, you know, when you grow something yourself and it’s close and it’s local, oftentimes it tastes really good.”
Comerford, one of the chefs, said she designed the menu for the governors’ dinner to reflect the season and represent the US spirit. It included beef from Nebraskasea scallops from Massachusetts, red dragon carrots from Ohio, and watermelon radishes grown in the Washington area. The dessert featured huckleberries from Idaho. In this concern Yosses said “We like to use regional specialties, natural and unadulterated whenever possible.”
To say about her favorite dishes Mrs Obama technically said the waffles and grits at breakfast were particular family favorites. Though she praised the soups and salads served for lunch as well. She also said that president Obama, is a big fan of scallops and pie. Joining with six students in the kitchen the first lady was eulogized and students were happy.
